Exiled Azerbaijani media outlets Meydan TV and AbzasMedia have won the 2026 Free Media Pioneer Award, a recognition presented by the International Press Institute (IPI) and International Media Support (IMS) to organizations advancing independent journalism and the free flow of information. The award comes at a time of unprecedented pressure on independent media in Azerbaijan.

A group of Hong Kong journalists forced into exile has launched Pulse HK, an independent online media outlet publishing in Chinese. The platform aims to fill the void left by the forced shutdown of independent Hong Kong media outlets, including Apple Daily five years ago. RSF spoke with Shirley Leung, co-founder of the platform.

The International Center for Journalists has named Cuban exiled journalist and El Toque co-founder José J. Nieves a recipient of its 2026 Knight International Journalism Award. Forced to leave Cuba in 2022, Nieves has continued reporting on the island from abroad, documenting repression and amplifying voices silenced at home.

Exile journalists in Europe are not safe from their authoritarian countries of origin: dictatorships persecute, threaten media workers critical of the regime beyond their own borders, even in states that are supposed to offer them protection. The EP adopted a resolution on transnational repression in the plenary on Tuesday, to which RSF contributed civil society expertise.

Today, the IPI and IMS are proud to announce this year’s recipients of the World Press Freedom Hero and Free Media Pioneer awards, who together demonstrate remarkable courage, ingenuity, and resilience amid an increasingly challenging environment for press freedom and independent journalism around the world.

RSF welcomes the court ruling on 10 June in the trial concerning the attempted assassination of Azerbaijani blogger Mahammad Mirzali. By handing down sentences of up to 30 years in prison, the French justice system has sent a clear message: transnational repression carried out by authoritarian regimes on European soil will not go unpunished.

Journalists who have fled authoritarian regimes and sought refuge in Germany are not automatically safe there either: an Egyptian journalist is attacked on a public street in Germany by a fellow Egyptian. A Russian reporter in Berlin is believed to have been the target of a poisoning attack. The family of an Iranian journalist is threatened because of his work in exile.

Press freedom is under unprecedented global pressure — and journalists are responding by building networks across borders. At the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, the taz panterstiftung launched its new panternetwork, uniting 500 journalists worldwide. Collaboration, they agree, is no longer optional: it’s the future of independent journalism.

In the aftermath of Myanmar’s February 2021 military takeover, independent journalist Linn soon fell foul of the regime’s crackdown on free expression. Having overthrown the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi, ending a decade of partial civilian rule, the junta – known as the Tatmadaw – quickly moved to clamp down on the media.

This article explains how international journalism festivals have become important spaces for exiled journalists to connect, collaborate, and continue their work despite repression in their home countries. It argues that exile journalism is growing due to increasing threats to press freedom, while also creating new opportunities for global reach and cross-border reporting.

According to Radzivon Biahliak, chairman of the Association of Belarusians in Latvia Supolka, the main achievement of advocacy efforts so far is that Belarusian journalists have remained at LSM+. The Belarusian section’s archive has also been preserved. Additionally, stories covering life and events in the diaspora are regularly published.

Belarusian independent media-in-exile face a unique financial crisis that goes far beyond typical non-profit sustainability challenges. Salvadoran journalist Carlos Dada — co‑founder and editor‑in‑chief of El Faro, now operating in exile due to repression in El Salvador — delivered the 2026 Reuters Memorial Lecture on “Journalism as Resistance.” He reflects on how independent reporting becomes an act of defiance under dictatorship, the challenges exiled newsrooms face, and the vital role of courageous journalism worldwide.

Earlier this month Donald Trump launched military strikes on Venezuela and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The ousting of Maduro was a momentous event for millions of Venezuelans, who have gone through hunger, political repression, a painful economic collapse and a massive exodus in the past two decades.

Luz Mely Reyes, a Venezuelan journalist in exile and director of the digital media outlet Efecto Cocuyo, quickly learned what was happening. She contacted a group of colleagues, also in exile, via text message, and within minutes they organized a live broadcast to inform their compatriots about what was going on in Venezuela.

When technology can manufacture any reality, the journalist becomes both witness and suspect. How can the media rebuild trust when truth itself feels optional? A conversation among editors, reporters, and thinkers on courage, verification, and storytelling in a time of noise.

In 2026, exiled media outlets will overhaul their business models, leaving behind grant dependency and moving toward diversified schemes that include products and services that their audiences — especially readers in the diaspora — are willing to pay for.
