OUR MANDATE

TARGETED SUPPORT FOR EXILED MEDIA

The JX Fund supports exiled media from countries where independent reporting is no longer possible due to repression, persecution, and censorship. To this end, the JX Fund collects and curates knowledge and data on the needs, challenges, and achievements of exiled media, conducts research, and connects and facilitates communication between various international actors. Its programs to support exiled media are developed dynamically and in response to needs, based on the data and observations collected.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

SUPPORTING INDEPENDENT VOICES

Since its foundation in April 2022, the JX Fund has supported 85 independent media outlets in exile from Afghanistan, Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine through grants and a wide range of projects tailored to the specific needs of media at different stages of exile.

Our initiatives include a publication on legal guidelines for the first steps in exile, the setup of several co-working and co-production spaces in Berlin, the organization of needs-oriented coaching and training for media outlets in exile, and efforts to connect exiled media professionals with leading journalists and publishers from around the world.

Support has been provided to well-known independent media with a broad reach, as well as to smaller, regionally focused outlets and start-ups concentrating on civic and cultural reporting. Preserving a diversity of journalistic voices, even in exile, is a key priority for the JX Fund.

The JX Fund has also published a series of comprehensive, data-based studies on exiled media landscapes from various countries. These studies provide concrete evidence of the importance and impact of independent media in exile: their content reaches millions, and in some cases, billions of people in their home countries, where independent reporting is otherwise unavailable.

In addition to our regional programs, we continually advise media outlets that contact us from across the globe and we help them establish connections with organizations that can support them.

OUR MISSION

FOR FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

We strongly believe that independent media reporting is essential for preserving democracy and fostering a free and open society. A free press holds public institutions accountable, exposes corruption and abuses of power, and provides critical commentary on social, cultural, political, and economic issues. It is the cornerstone of democratic discourse.

In an increasing number of countries, however, media outlets face state control, censorship, and repression. Journalists often lose the ability to report freely and critically, facing persecution and the threat of lengthy prison sentences.

It is precisely where independent media are repressed that they are most needed. By supporting media in exile, we help ensure that independent information continues to reach people in these countries. When exiled journalists collaborate and work together in editorial teams, they can provide more nuanced perspectives that carry greater impact. When in exile, it is vital to preserve a diversity of voices to sustain a vibrant civil society.

HOW WE WORK

BUILDING INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCES

The JX Fund acts as an international clearing house for journalism in exile. We collate the various offers of help from private and institutional supporters, companies, publishers, and civil society initiatives and connect them to the respective needs of exiled media outlets. We pool the available resources and funds in order to distribute them efficiently and sustainably, targeting them towards the areas most in need. Together with partner organizations and expert advisors, we develop projects with the goal of filling gaps in the existing funding structure.

The JX Fund is supported by a broad alliance of civil society organizations, media, and an extensive donor pool.

OUR NETWORK

WHAT WE DO

THE FOUR PILLARS OF OUR WORK

To sustainably and efficiently support an independent exiled media landscape, the JX Fund employs various tools which are seamlessly integrated within the individual projects.

Expertise

The JX Fund monitors and analyzes global developments connected to journalism in exile. It collects expertise from international stakeholders – expertise that is regional, entrepreneurial, or related to media development – and initiates studies with the goal of finding relevant data, attaining insights, and making this knowledge accessible to the wider public.

Funding

The JX Fund pools financial resources and, through its various projects and partnerships, allocates these resources according to current needs. It draws on public grants, institutional funding, and private donations. Thanks to its diverse sources of funding, the JX Fund is able to design fast, flexible, and largely unbureaucratic procedures that efficiently support media in exile.

Implementation

The JX Fund works closely with media in exile, developing projects in collaboration with experienced partner organizations to address gaps in the funding structure and provide dynamic responses to emerging needs. These partner organizations bring valuable expertise to the overall program, often drawing on years of relevant experience. The JX Fund ensures the seamless integration and coordination of projects within each regional program.

Communication

The JX Fund operates an international platform for journalism in exile, providing a space to promote and discuss current developments and research. Acting as an information hub for the international public, we offer insights into the relevance and impact of journalism in exile and its crucial role in supporting democratic developments worldwide and we provide information on useful tools and open calls.

PRIVATE DONATIONS

From cameras to the financing of entire editorial structures: every euro donated goes directly to supporting media in exile. Not only that, it goes where it is needed most: one of the core tasks of the JX Fund is to respond to the current needs of media in exile through projects and support programs – in close coordination with the media outlets themselves, with our partner organizations, and in cooperation with external experts.

As a non-profit organization, we are happy to issue a receipt for any donations of 300€ or more.

INSTITUTIONAL DONATIONS

Defending freedom of the press and information is an issue of the utmost urgency for many international institutions and foundations because it is the independent media which forms the basis for open debate within democratic societies. Supporting and promoting media organizations whose work has been curtailed through repression in their home countries therefore directly contributes to building and maintaining democracy.

OUR STRUCTURE

EFFICIENT SYNERGIES

The JX Fund was jointly initiated in April 2022 by Reporters Without Borders, the Schöpflin Foundation, and the Rudolf Augstein Foundation, who all remain associated as shareholders. With the JX Fund, they have created a modern and powerful instrument that brings together different stakeholder groups to support independent media in exile: foundations, NGOs, media, and the public sector. Each group contributes its strengths, such as flexible, unbureaucratic funding, practical expertise, and international networks. With these synergies, efficient and independent support can be provided.

The JX Fund is a non-profit limited liability company. Its operations are financed through both public and private funds. The JX Fund received an ED certificate recognizing it as equivalent to a Certified Public Charity.
