Media in exile face the challenge of reinventing their production and research methods while working from abroad. Building local and international partnerships is crucial for market integration and access to diverse resources. JX Fund has launched several projects to enhance content production and foster transnational collaboration.
AI RESILIENCE PROGRAM
Many exiled newsrooms operate under extreme resource constraints and face significant digital vulnerabilities. Language barriers, limited technical capacity, and high security risks make it difficult for them to adopt AI tools safely and pragmatically, even as the pressure to innovate and remain sustainable continues to grow.
The AI Resilience Program for Media in Exile supports Europe-based news outlets that serve as independent media in exile from authoritarian contexts. The program addresses critical gaps in skills and access by helping newsrooms responsibly use AI for translation, workflow automation, and audience insight, while safeguarding editorial independence and data security.
- Implementation: European Journalism Centre (EJC), The Newsroom, JX Fund
- Runtime: November 2025 – January 2026
Supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
SPACE & DATA HELPDESK GRANTS
This project supports exiled independent media in using satellite imagery and geodata to strengthen investigative reporting and uncover otherwise inaccessible stories. It provides hands-on coaching, technical guidance, and access to high-resolution imagery to help integrate these tools into ongoing research.
- Implementation: Vertical52, Deep City, JX Fund
- Runtime: November – December 2025
Supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
TECH INNOVATION GRANTS
Independent media working in and around Belarus and Russia continue to face unprecedented challenges: restricted access to information, blocked distribution channels, and increasing digital threats. At the same time, many media teams are developing creative and technologically advanced solutions to reach audiences, verify information, and ensure secure, efficient workflows.
The Tech Grants for independent exiled media from Belarus and Russia aim to support such practical, near-ready innovations.
- Implementation: JX Fund
- Runtime: October – December 2025
Supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
ENHANCING RESEARCH CAPABILITIES: SATELLITE JOURNALISM
This project aims to provide exiled media with access to high-resolution satellite data and the tools necessary for complex analysis. This initiative responds to the high demand among journalists who, due to safety concerns, could only monitor events in their home countries from a distance. By offering satellite and radar data, the project facilitates investigative research, helping exiled media to continue to provide independent information and counter government propaganda and disinformation.
- Implementation: Vertical52, JX Fund
- Runtime: November – December 2023, November – December 2024
Supported by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).
